MONAS (Monumen Nasional), Icon Indonesia


MONAS (Monumen Nasional / National Monument) is a monument at the same time the iconic museum Indonesia and Jakarta. This monument was founded by Ir. Sukarno, Indonesia's first president in memory of resistance and struggle of the people of Indonesia won independence from the Dutch East Indies. Obelisk-shaped monument is coated with Italian marble, crowned with a gilded flame symbolizes the spirit of fiery struggle. Located at Merdeka Square - Jakarta Pusat, Monas construction began on August 17, 1961 and opened to the public on July 12, 1975.

Friedrich Silaban and R. M. Soedarsono became the architect of the construction of this magnificent monument, built in the form of Lingga and Yoni on demand President Ir. Soekarno.
